SocioAfrica has expressed deep concern over the continued instability of Nigeria’s power supply, particularly as the nation approaches the Christmas season—a period that should be marked by light, comfort, and togetherness, not darkness and uncertainty.
Across the country, households, small businesses, hospitals, students, and faith communities are grappling with frequent outages, grid instability, and unreliable electricity, placing additional strain on families and the economy at a time when relief is most needed.
Power Is Not a Luxury — It Is a Necessity
Electricity is fundamental to human dignity and economic survival. When power fails, livelihoods suffer, healthcare delivery is compromised, learning is disrupted, and families are pushed toward costly and unsafe alternatives.
SocioAfrica believes that no Nigerian should be forced to endure prolonged darkness, especially during a season meant to symbolize hope and renewal.
Gas Supply and the National Grid
A major factor contributing to Nigeria’s recurring power challenges is the inconsistent supply of gas to thermal power plants, which directly affects generation capacity and the stability of the national grid.
Without reliable gas-to-power coordination, grid collapses and widespread outages become inevitable—no matter the efforts of distribution companies or end users.
SocioAfrica’s Intervention
In response to this urgent situation, SocioAfrica has formally written a powerful letter to the:
- Federal Ministry of Power
- Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources
- Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
The letter calls for immediate collaboration and decisive action to:
- Ensure adequate and sustained gas supply to power generation companies
- Prioritize electricity generation during the festive period
- Strengthen coordination between gas suppliers, GenCos, TCN, and DisCos
- Stabilize the national grid and prevent further disruptions
This intervention is driven not by politics, but by concern for the wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians.
A Call for a Brighter Christmas
A stable electricity supply this Christmas would:
- Ease hardship for families
- Support small businesses and artisans
- Reduce dependence on generators and fuel costs
- Improve safety, healthcare delivery, and community life
- Restore public confidence and national morale
SocioAfrica firmly believes that Nigeria has the resources and capacity to achieve grid stability through effective gas supply management and institutional coordination.
Standing With the People
SocioAfrica exists to amplify the voices of the people and advocate for systems that promote dignity, stability, and socio-economic development. Speaking up on issues that affect daily life—such as electricity—is part of that responsibility.
We urge relevant authorities to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and to act decisively in the interest of the Nigerian people.
As a nation, we deserve light, stability, and hope—not just at Christmas, but every day.
