SocioAfrica Labels African Union Commission Chairman ‘Useless’ Following Congratulatory Message to President Paul Biya

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – October 29, 2025 – SocioAfrica, a leading independent platform dedicated to African governance and socio-political analysis, today issued a scathing rebuke of African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf for offering congratulations to President Paul Biya following his recent re-election in Cameroon.

In a sharply worded statement, SocioAfrica declared the Chairperson’s move to be “politically naive and morally useless,” arguing that it undermines the AU’s stated commitments to democracy, human rights, and good governance across the continent.

Key Points of SocioAfrica’s Condemnation:

  1. Ignoring Affliction: The congratulatory message came while Cameroon continues to grapple with severe internal crises, notably the ongoing conflict and humanitarian concerns in the Anglophone regions. SocioAfrica insists that the AU, through its leadership, should prioritize diplomatic action toward conflict resolution and justice, rather than issuing routine political endorsements.
  2. Moral Vacuum: “The role of the AU Chairperson is not to rubber-stamp the political status quo, but to be the conscience of the continent,” stated [Insert Name/Title, e.g., SocioAfrica’s Chief Editor, Amara Okoro]. “By extending congratulations to a head of state widely criticized for decades of entrenched power and alleged human rights abuses, Chairman Youssouf demonstrates a profound disconnect from the aspirations of the African people. In this context, his leadership is rendered morally useless.”
  3. Undermining Credibility: SocioAfrica argues that such endorsements erode the AU’s credibility on the global stage, especially when dealing with complex issues of democratic transitions and conflict zones.

Call to Action:

SocioAfrica urgently calls upon Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to retract the congratulatory statement and instead use his office to initiate an immediate, substantive dialogue on the crises facing Cameroon. Furthermore, SocioAfrica demands that the AUC establish clear, ethical guidelines preventing the endorsement of leaders whose administrations face credible accusations of human rights violations or suppression of democratic freedoms.

SocioAfrica remains committed to holding continental leadership accountable and advocating for democratic ideals that serve the welfare of all Africans.
